Snowmobiling

What is Snowmobiling like?

Snowmobile toursSnowmobiling is a fun and exciting pass time for many Yukoners young and old! Snowmobiling through the Yukon's unspoiled wilderness, will bring you to places you can not get to easily by foot, snowshoe, or dog team. With a snowmobile, the journey can either be an exhilarating ride up and down magnificent mountains or a relaxing ride through the forest and down historic trails.

All Up North Adventures winter tours are guided for your safety. Before commencing on any trip, we provide basic training on how to operate and ride a snowmobile safely. Snow machine helmets are provided and we supply warm high-quality winter outer clothing and boots - if required. We will also leave an itinerary with departure and arrival locations along with dates and times with the Up North Adventures’ team. All our guides always travel with a SAT phone and a well stocked First Aid Kit on any snowmobile tour.

Below are the three multi day snowmobiling/multi activity tours we would like to offer you.

Trip 1

The Cheechako

snowmobileA Cheechako is a foreigner or alien to the Northern environment.
On this tour, we will take you on a 2 day snowmobile adventure into the Yukon backcountry. Your tour guide will meet you the night before the start of your trip at our location. Together, you will choose the right clothing and helmets for the trip and go through some last minute questions.

On day 1, the Up North Adventures Van will pick you up at your hotel and off we go to the starting point of our adventure. The drive to the starting point takes about 1 hour and by noon, we should be all geared up and ready to hit the trail. Part of the journey is run on the renowned Yukon Quest Trail and there will be numerous opportunities to stop and take in the scenery. We will make a lunch stop and enjoy hot food and drinks to stay comfortable. Early afternoon, we arrive at the Lodge that will be our home for the night. Together, we will get the fire going, drill a hole into the ice on Coghlan Lake for water and prepare the Lodge for the night. Tonight’s hearty, northern dinner will be prepared and enjoyed together and your guide will be happy to share knowledge and stories about the Yukon. After dinner, we will get the sauna ready and for a real northern experience, roll in the snow!

On day 2, the Cheechakos can go for a morning snowmobile tour or an ice fishing adventure on the lake. At around 1pm, we will have to pack up and break camp for the journey back to civilization. On our trip back we will take our time to enjoy the trail and the scenery, check out animal tracks and have a nice lunch stop. Back at our starting point, we can go to the local Lodge and enjoy some hot drinks while the Up North Adventures van will be loaded up with our gear and made ready for the trip back to Whitehorse. We hope you enjoyed this introduction into the winter wonders of the Yukon and will come back for a longer adventure!

Together, we will get the fire going, drill a hole into the ice on Coghlin Lake for water and prepare the Lodge for the night. If time and light permits, we can go and explore the closer area of the Lodge, too. Tonight’s hearty, northern dinner will be prepared and enjoyed together and your guide will be happy to share knowledge and stories about the Yukon. After dinner, we will get the sauna ready and for a real northern experience, roll in the snow!

Day 2 can be filled with a variety of winter activities. Let us know if you are interested in snowshoeing or ice fishing and we will plan day 2 accordingly. There are numerous trails and a million ways to explore the surroundings of Coghlan. On all our trips, we try to combine the fun with a learning experience and will introduce you to the Yukon’s wildlife, how to read tracks, winter safety and winter camping experiences. We can show you how to build an emergency shelter in the snow and how to make a fire. All this is part of winter living and a ton of fun!

After the day spent outside, you will appreciate the comforts of the Lodge and enjoy a good meal together. If we are lucky, we will be able to catch the Northern Lights tonight!

On day 3, the Yukoners will have to break camp and start the journey back to civilization. On our trip back we will take our time to enjoy the trail and the scenery, check out animal tracks and have a nice lunch stop. Trip 3

The Sourdough

Officially, only a person that has “survived” a winter in the Yukon has the right to call him or herself a Sourdough. Now, that would be a long trip! Our Sourdough Tour turns into a quasi Sourdough even after only 5 days and 4 nights.

Day 2 will start with a hearty northern breakfast followed by a snowshoe hike. This comparably slower pace will allow you to better identify animal tracks along the way and to appreciate the surroundings in a different manner. Geared up with cameras, a packed lunch and hot drinks, we will head out. Back at the Lodge, after a well deserved supper we will start the fire in the sauna; for a real Yukon winter experience roll in the snow!

On day 3 we will introduce you to the world of ice fishing. After a ride North on the Yukon Quest trail towards Frank Lake by snowmobile, where there will be time to stop and photograph the picturesque Coghlan Creek we will spend the rest of the day on Frank Lake. A fire will keep us warm while waiting for the big catch. With a little bit of luck, we can cook the catch of the day right on site. You will be surprised how tasty it is! In the afternoon, we will head back to our base camp and enjoy a relaxed evening.

The following day is fully dedicated to a snowmobile experience. This time, we will head South on the original Yukon Quest trail to the shores of Lake Laberge. On the way we will pass through an area devastated by a forest fire in 1999 which created a very special landscape. There are some beaver houses to investigate, too. The snowmobile ride leads you through forest trails, over small lakes and open fields. We will have lunch on the shores of Lake Laberge before returning to the comfort of the Lodge.

Our last day, day 5, we will have a relaxed start and a hearty breakfast. You will have a chance to take some last pictures as we prepare to break camp and pack the snowmobiles for the ride home. We will arrive at Braeburn in the early afternoon. As the snowmobiles will be loaded on the trucks you can enjoy the fresh & famous Cinnamon buns with coffee at the restaurant. After the drive back to Whitehorse we will say our good-byes and bring you to your hotel or B&B where civilization will embrace you with a hot shower or bath to relax and reflect on the adventures Up North you just experienced.
