KAYAK FISHING COURSE

Why Kayak Fishing? The answer is simple – you catch more fish! Kayaks allow anglers to access lakes and rivers that have never seen a lure, have very little fishing pressure, make no noise and create no pollution. Kayaks are safe and easy to use, require very little maintenance and are affordable!

This is your chance to learn all about this exciting new sport. Our course consists of 2 evening sessions and 1 full day session. It is designed to give you the fundamentals of both kayaking and kayak fishing and get you started in the right direction. Fish on!

Course Dates are:

Class 1 (Intro to Kayaking) - June 10th, 7:00pm to 10:00 pm @ Chadburn Lake
This three hour clinic will give you all the skills you need to enter and exit the kayak, launch and land, basic strokes required for safe paddling, equipment choices and a brief introduction to kayak rescues.

Class 2 (Intro to Kayak Fishing) – June 12th, 7:0pm to 10:00 pm @ Pumphouse Lake (on Fish Lake Road)
On our second night, our Instructors will teach you how to fish from your kayak. Topics include casting, trolling, landing fish, catch and release techniques, and rigging your boat for maximum safety, ease and efficiency. We'll be targeting Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling tonight.

Class 3 (Full Day including catered lunch) - June 14th at Snafu Lake 7:00 am (meet at UNA) to 6:00 pm (return to UNA)
Day three offers the chance to practice what we've learned so far in our first two classes. Under the watchful eye of our Instructors, we'll spend the entire day exploring Snafu lake. Blending our paddling skills with either fly rod or spin cast, we'll be stalking Northern Pike, Arctic Grayling and Lake Trout. The days starts at 7:00 am at Up North Adventures where the van and driver will have the trailer loaded with our boats and gear. We'll be back in town by 6:00 pm.

Cost is $295.00 per person plus GST and includes all boats and paddling gear. Lunch and transportation are provided on the full day trip. <Students are responsible for their own fishing gear and fishing license.>

Meet our guides:

Steve Hahn

Steve Hahn has been messing around in the outdoors since he was 13 years old. An accomplished fly angler, boater and telemark skier, he has plyed rivers, with rod and paddle in hand, all over North America. A graduate of the Sweetwater Travel Guide School, Steve is skilled at the oars of a drift boat or on the tiller of a jet sled. When not working for Up North, you will usually find him close to a body of water casting to rising fish with the double handed rod.Whether casting tiny dry flies to grayling or shredding the backcountry, Steve always is there to lend a hand and answer any questions you have.
He is a certified Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic and has over 10 years of rescue experience. A skilled teacher, Steve teaches the wilderness medicine programs at Up North, and his years of remote medical, rescue and risk management experience enhance the level of safety in the company. Steve has been playing in the Yukon for over ten years and honestly believes it is one of the last true secret places in the North. His greatest pleasure would be to create a fly angling experience that lasts a lifetime.

Dennis Zimmerman

Originally a city boy from Vancouver, Dennis has been converted and has now lived in the north for over ten years. As a tour operator and a fishing guide he was able to see some magnificent places and share this north with people from all over the world. Dennis is an avid angler and when he's not on the water (or on the ice in winter!) Dennis writes a fishing column "Been There Fished That" for “What's Up Yukon”magazine and on his website www.fishonyukon.com.  For Dennis, it's all about getting outside in the Yukon with family, friends and especially young kids and enjoying a day of fishing!
